From 2007-2013 I freelanced as a music journalist for a variety of venues, including SPIN Magazine, Transmission Entertainment, Little Radio, and Soundcheck. Behind all of these opportunities, though, was the Austinist, a Gothamist-affiliated arts and culture website based out of Austin, Texas.
While Interviews Editor for the Austinist, I had the opportunity to interview all sorts of interesting people, from Henry Rollins to “Weird Al” Yankovic to Paul Giamatti to tons and tons of great musicians.
My approach to interviews is a simple one: 1.) research your subject like crazy, 2.) don’t ask the questions everyone else asks, 3.) let the conversation go where it wants to go, and 4.) shut the hell up and let him/her talk.
Here’s a brief sampling of some of my favorite interviews:
Character Actor Extraordinaire Larry Miller on Christopher Guest, Austin, and Wife-Killing…and on Hulk Hogan, Booing, and Hair Replacement
